Jett Travolta, the 16 year of son of John and Kelly Travolta, died after having a seizure while on family vacation in Bahamas. Death may be related to Kawasaki disease.

Jett Travolta, John Travolta and Kelly Preston's 16 year old son has tragically died as a result of a seizure in the Bahamas. ABC News reported that Jett Travolta died at the family’s vacation home in the Bahamas after what the family’s lawyer said was a seizure related incident. John Travolta and Kelly Preston and their children were in the Bahamas celebrating the New Year.

The Travoltas have long claimed that Jett Travolta had Kawasaki disease that was caused by exposure to chemical carpet cleaner.

The Travolta’s have reportedly come under fire over the years for denying that their son had autism. People have accused the couple of withholding treatment for autism because of Travolta’s belief in Scientology.

Symptoms of Kawasaki Disease

According to the Mayo Clinic website, Kawasaki disease is a condition that causes inflammation in the walls of the small and medium sized arteries throughout the body. The disease is also called a lymph node syndrome because it also affects the nymph nodes, skin and mucous membranes inside the mouth, nose and throat.

While a medical reason of the disease has not been definitely established, there are a number of theories that link the disease to viruses, bacteria, environmental chemicals or pollutants.

The first phase begins with a high fever that lasts one to two weeks. The doctors may suspect Kawasaki’s if the child develops four or more of the following symptoms: red eyes, rash on main part of body, lips that are red and dry, red swollen tongue, palms that are swollen and red, sore throat and swollen lymph nodes n the neck.

As the disease progresses, additional symptoms may develop, including peeling skin on hands and feet, joint pain, diarrhea, vomiting and abdominal pain.

Complications of Kawasaki disease include inflammation of the heart muscle, enlarged heart, abnormal heart rhythm and inflammation of the blood vessels.

Seizure Disorder

Jett Travolta’s death reportedly followed a seizure episode. Seizures are episodes of uncontrolled movements and loss of consciousness. Seizures have variable symptoms and vary between patients and episodes. Some parties have period of blank staring while other have massive convulsions.

While seizures can often be successfully controlled with medication, not all patients respond to treatment. A seizure is a condition that can be dangerous as the patient can lose control unexpectedly, such as when driving a car or operating heavy equipment. People can also choke, smother or injure themselves while having a seizure.

Seizures have several causes, including genetics, accident, disease, stroke or medical trauma. In about half of the affected people the cause of seizures is never determined.
