Neurontin is a brand name prescription drug that is used in treating things like epilepsy. Medications effect children differently and knowing how it works is important.
Neurontin is a brand name prescription drug that is commonly prescribed to offset seizures. Gabapentin may be prescribed as the generic version. Patients with epilepsy may be prescribed Neurontin as its primary use is to treat partial seizures. It's also used to treat adult patients with shingles, people with frequent migraines, neuropathic pain, and nystagmus. When given to children to treat seizures, there are some side effects that may not occur for adults. As with any prescription drug, the effects and benefits should be discussed with a doctor before administering the medication. FeverA fever is described as a temporary increase in one's internal body temperature. A fever is the body's natural way of saying something is wrong and will typically subside on its own. This side effect may happen to children treated for epilepsy but normally not adults. While fevers can be mild, the more severe ones can be extremely dangerous to a child's health or an indicator that something more severe is going on. BronchitisBronchitis is an acute inflammation of the airways. The trachea, as well as the large and small bronchi will become inflamed. When this happens extra mucus is produced, causing a lot of coughing. Since the cough can last more than two weeks, it can also cause pain in the upper abdominal/lower thorax area. Weight IncreaseWeight increase is a side effect that children treated for epilepsy may experience when taking Neurontin. It's normally not a side effect adults may see. Weight gain can be harmful to child's health and should be watched closely. There is a potential for immense weight gain of up to 10 pounds per month. Viral InfectionA viral infection is an infection caused by a virus instead of a bacteria. Unlike a bacterial infection, a virus needs a host to live. It utilizes the body's mechanisms to multiply, usually at the expense of the host. Most viral infections need to run their course, but there are some antiviral medications available to treat certain types of viral infections. Blurred VisionThis can be classified as blurry vision or double vision. A child may not know how to explain this feeling but may complain of a headache. Blurred vision may show when trying to concentrate on something like reading. Vision could also be distorted where the child may see wavy lines when looking at things. VertigoVertigo means a feeling of dizziness and can be a common side effect to many prescription drugs. Neurontin can make one feel lightheaded at times and can be an uncomfortable feeling, but normally it goes away on its own as the body gets used to the prescription drug. Behavioral ProblemsThe behavioral problems may include unstable emotions, hostility, aggression, hyperactivity or lack of concentration. Behavior problems may vary. Children treated for epilepsy by using Neurontin may be prone to one or more of these side effects and a doctor can recommend different medications if the problems become severe.
